LOP or Life Of Pi could have been one of the best and accomplished movies I ever watched & enjoyed......
I dont prefer being a very calculative and smart critic, rather I shall prefer narrating my experience with the movie. Starting with Mr. Ang Lee, the Chinese director of LOP, who has always been found carrying the quality of depicting a true Asian martial arts and chivalry act in most of his movies: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , Ride with the Devil or Pushing Hands . This time he might have refreshed his orthodox thought and tried out a new arena of beautiful film making. The movie, though, usually begin with an Indian approach of seeing / believing things, it suddenly jumps on to another frame of typical reference. A young Indian village lad interestingly called Pi ( a repetitive mathematical expression ) is vividly staged common with his views/arguments / beliefs. He sometimes becomes too close to things surrounding him what even lead him to verbal mismatch within a material world we are dwelling. The original novelist Yann Martel, might have won a Booker for LOP, but writing things, I feel, is much simpler than depicting them on celluloid. Here comes Ang Lee again, his brilliant thoughtfulness alongside an eternal mastery of modern film making (technology, software, hardware etc.etc.) put an extremely critical subject sprinting fast on camera. I am truly amazed by the way he handled "DEPENDENCY" , "HABITUATION" and "ADDICTION" among animals (I mean human also) in this big big universe. On this particular note I must say that the movie LOP differs largely from another great movie (we watched during our hostel days) - "CAST AWAY" . "CAST AWAY" talked about solitude and struggle for survival, whereas LOP portrayed SURVIVAL = DEPENDENCY. Guys I can go on writing pages and pages on this particular topic, but be it another day/moment.
I just want to conclude with the following lines:-
LOP is not only a visual masterpiece, it also proudly sets a cinematic standard of diversified experience and achievements. I never thought cinema could be so effective and penetrating in inseminating constructive ideas and views of an ever confused balance among every single living things in this universe. It reminds me of the adventure the scientists in CERN might have had while unfurling the mystery of our universe.
Thanks to one of my college mates, for encouraging my dying writing spirit and skill.
